Heritage
A house, in its own words
Joseph Quartana never intended to work in fashion or fragrance. In interviews, he has described entering the industry as unforeseen, a path that emerged from his earlier work rather than a lifelong ambition. His professional journey included founding Seven New York, a venture that placed him in proximity to retail and consumer experience without committing him to traditional fashion trajectories. This background in unexpected spaces shaped how he would later approach fragrance creation. Rather than following established industry formulas, Quartana developed his nose through hands-on experience over approximately 18 years in the field, eventually creating 42 perfume releases across his ventures including Six Scents and Parfums Quartana. Joseph de Jour arrived in 1997 as a distillation of his early creative thinking. The fragrance captures a specific moment in Quartana's development as a designer, before the expansion of his later work. The brand's heritage lies in this origin story: an industry outsider who found his calling through exploration rather than formal training, building a body of work that spans multiple ventures while Joseph remains his most singular statement. The house has no extensive archive or historical catalog to draw from. Instead, its heritage is contained in one fragrance, a single point of reference that demands attention on its own terms. The philosophy behind Joseph centers on authenticity over convention. Quartana built his approach in opposition to industry expectations, creating fragrances that reflected personal vision rather than market research. His background as someone who never anticipated entering this field became an asset, allowing him to question assumptions that industry veterans might take for granted. He treats fragrance as a medium for storytelling, translating experiences and perspectives into olfactory form. This narrative quality distinguishes his work from fragrances designed primarily for mass appeal. The deliberate limitation of Joseph's catalog reflects a belief that fewer, more considered releases carry more weight than numerous seasonal offerings. Each fragrance becomes a complete thought rather than a product line extension. Quartana's philosophy also embraces the non-linear nature of creative development. His entry into perfumery came through winding professional paths rather than direct pursuit. This trajectory informs his belief that meaningful creation often emerges from unexpected circumstances. The philosophy rejects the idea that commercial success and artistic integrity must be opposing forces.
