A house, in its own words
Homoelegans was established in 2015 by Francesco Gini and Maurizio Piazzi, two figures whose backgrounds in Italian creative industries informed their approach to building an independent fragrance house. Rather than positioning themselves within an established perfume dynasty or seeking venture capital for rapid expansion, the founders created a self-financed project grounded in artistic conviction. The decision to launch their first fragrance in 2015, titled Quality Of Flesh, set an immediate precedent for the brand's direction. The choice of such an unconventional name, evoking the raw materiality of human existence rather than promising pleasant sensory experience, signaled that Homoelegans would operate on different terms than most niche houses entering the market at that time. The brand released Tadzio the same year, another title that resists easy categorization, drawing from literature and cultural reference rather than olfactory description. This deliberate departure from industry norms characterized the house's early years. The following years saw a measured release schedule: Paloma y Raices in 2017, followed by Ivre de Vie and Song For a Rising Sun in 2018, with Like a Jewel completing the collection in 2019. Each fragrance arrived without fanfare or traditional marketing campaigns, relying instead on the growing network of fragrance enthusiasts and independent retailers who sought alternatives to the homogenized offerings of larger houses. The brand's Italian identity manifests not in overt national symbolism but in the considered, unhurried approach to creation that distinguishes the project from the pace of commercial fragrance production.
The founders articulated their purpose with notable directness: to create something innovative, independent, and contemporary. This stated intent shapes every aspect of how Homoelegans operates. By declining to attribute their fragrances to named perfumers, the house makes a philosophical statement about authorship and collective creative vision. The fragrances exist as complete works rather than demonstrations of individual talent, aligning with a perspective that treats scent as integrated artistic expression rather than technical craft. The naming conventions for each fragrance reinforce this intellectual approach. Titles like Quality Of Flesh, Ivre de Vie, and Song For a Rising Sun function as portals to literary and cultural territories rather than descriptors of olfactory content. They ask the wearer to engage conceptually with the fragrance before experiencing it physically, reversing the typical marketing logic that promises specific sensory pleasures. This approach positions Homoelegans within a tradition of conceptual art that uses objects and experiences to illuminate ideas, treating fragrance as a medium for philosophical inquiry. The contemporary aspect of their mission manifests not through trendy ingredients or youth-oriented marketing but through a certain rigor and self-awareness about what perfume can be and mean. The brand operates quietly in the fragrance landscape, avoiding the promotional intensity that characterizes much of the niche segment, allowing each release to accumulate meaning through discussion among those who encounter them.
