The Story
Why it exists.
The beginning
In 2018, H&M Beauty approached berries as more than a perfumery staple. Olivier Pescheux and Nisrine Bouazzaoui Grillié, working with Givaudan, created Luscious pulp: named for the texture of berries at their peak, not a concept or a mood board. It's a fragrance that smells like the idea it came from, which is rarer than it should be. The composition takes wild berries and translates them into something that feels intentional, a fruity pulse that arrives with purpose and holds its character throughout wear. There's no overworking of the materials here, just a clear reference point and the confidence to let the berry speak for itself. The result is a scent that delivers on its premise without pretense, a fruity fragrance that knows exactly what it wants to be.
What makes the composition interesting is its refusal to fully commit to sweetness. Wild berries carry a natural sourness, a sharpness that fruit-focused fragrances often smooth over in favor of accessibility. Here, that acidity stays, cutting through the juicy body and keeping the scent from reading as candy or air freshener. The woody base doesn't overpower, but it provides the structural weight that stops the berry note from evaporating in the first twenty minutes. It's the difference between berry jam and berry compote, one is all sweetness, the other has texture and depth. This is the compote version.
The evolution
The opening hits bright and tart, the kind of berry smell that arrives with intention. It's all about that sour-fruity pulse, present, unapologetic, nothing like the soft-focus berry interpretations that populate the affordable tier. The heart settles as the sharpness softens slightly and the fragrance warms against skin, but the berry presence doesn't disappear. The woody notes begin their slow rise, arriving as a quiet warmth rather than a dramatic drydown announcement. The berry and wood exist in conversation, neither dominant, both present. The sillage pulls close. This is a skin scent, not a room-filler. On fabric, a faint woody trace lingers into the later hours, maintaining that intimate quality throughout the wear.
Cultural impact
H&M Berries - Luscious pulp offers an uncomplicated, honest scent that delivers on its premise without pretense. The wild berry note leans into tartness rather than sugar, presenting berry as actual fruit rather than a candy metaphor. This approach sets it apart from sweeter mass-market offerings, giving consumers who want something more genuine a viable option in the accessible fragrance space. The tart-fruity character brings an unexpected edge to the category, suggesting that affordable fragrances can offer real personality and conviction rather than playing it safe with familiar, watered-down interpretations.
