Heritage
A house, in its own words
Gwyneth Paltrow launched Goop in September 2008 as a weekly email newsletter designed to share products and experiences she genuinely appreciated with friends. The newsletter format proved popular and expanded into a broader lifestyle platform encompassing beauty, fashion, wellness, travel, and food content. Goop grew from a personal curation project into a media and commerce company with international reach. The fragrance division emerged from Paltrow's interest in scent as an extension of the brand's wellness positioning. In 2016, Goop entered the fragrance market with Edition 01, a winter release developed with Douglas Little, founder of Heretic Parfum. The collaboration continued with Edition 02 in 2017 and subsequent releases, establishing the brand as a conceptual presence in the fragrance space rather than a conventional perfume house. The 2020 launch of the candle This Smells Like My Vagina generated significant media attention and discussion, positioning Goop fragrances as deliberately provocative and conversation-starting rather than safely commercial. Goop's approach to fragrance rejects the polish of mainstream perfumery in favor of conceptual boldness and ingredient honesty. The brand treats scent as an extension of its broader wellness philosophy, emphasizing that fragrance should provoke thought and conversation rather than simply smell pleasant. Douglas Little, the collaborating perfumer behind the line, has described the development process as experimental and intuitive, working directly with Paltrow to translate conceptual ideas into olfactory experiences. The provocative naming strategy evident in releases like This Smells Like My Vagina reflects a deliberate rejection of conventional luxury fragrance marketing. Rather than relying on romantic or aspirational scent descriptions, Goop fragrances use confrontational titles and marketing language that challenge assumptions about what luxury scent branding should look and sound like. This approach aligns with the brand's overall positioning as a wellness authority willing to challenge conventions and spark discourse.
