Heritage
A house, in its own words
Christopher Wicks founded English Laundry in 2010, bringing with him decades of experience as a shirt designer. Born in Manchester, England during the 1960s, Wicks spent his formative years studying the meticulous details of classic English fashion. His early admiration for British sartorial traditions would eventually shape both his clothing and fragrance lines. Before entering perfumery, Wicks built his reputation through English Laundry shirts, a collection that drew from selected English stripes, plaids, and solid poplins from the 1960s and 1970s. The transition from textile design to fragrance creation felt natural for Wicks, who approached scent development with the same attention to proportion, balance, and detail that defined his tailoring work. His Manchester roots placed him at the heart of England's industrial textile heritage, a history that informed his understanding of quality craftsmanship. The fragrance house quickly expanded beyond its initial offerings, with Wicks personally overseeing the creative direction of each perfume in the collection. Today, English Laundry maintains its British identity while reaching an international audience seeking accessible luxury without compromising on sophistication.
English Laundry operates from a simple conviction: classic English elegance should be within reach. The brand rejects the notion that refined fragrance requires intimidating complexity or unapproachable aesthetics. Instead, each perfume in the collection aims to capture recognizable facets of British character: composure, intelligence, understated confidence. The brand's tagline, "Elegant. Arrogant. English." captures this spirit directly. Wicks designed the fragrance line as an extension of his broader design philosophy, treating scent as another form of personal presentation. Just as a well-cut shirt communicates before a word is spoken, a signature fragrance announces identity. The brand positions itself not as a challenger disrupting the industry nor as a keeper of ancient traditions, but as a steady presence offering reliable quality. The approach is democratic without being cheap, aspirational without being pretentious. English Laundry fragrances layer familiar aromatic elements into compositions that feel both timeless and current, avoiding fleeting trends in favor of lasting appeal.
