Heritage
A house, in its own words
Elie Tahari was born in Jerusalem and immigrated to New York City as a teenager. He began his career in the garment industry, working in various capacities before establishing his eponymous label in 1973. Tahari initially sold women's clothing to boutique buyers before building his brand into a global fashion house. In 1997, he co-founded Theory, a contemporary sportswear label that became a significant success and operated alongside his eponymous brand. His business acumen and design sensibility positioned him among the prominent voices in American fashion during the late 20th century. The transition into fragrance came decades after the fashion label's establishment, with the company signing a worldwide licensing deal with TPR Holdings LLC to develop and distribute its scent collection. This move brought the Elie Tahari aesthetic into the fragrance market, translating the brand's clean, sophisticated sensibility into scented form. The brand's Manhattan headquarters serves as the nerve center for its global operations, overseeing both fashion and fragrance divisions. The Elie Tahari approach to fragrance draws from the same design philosophy that governs the fashion collections: clean lines, understated elegance, and modern sophistication. The brand seeks to create scents that feel effortless and wearable rather than dramatic or overpowering. Elie Tahari himself has spoken about approaching fragrance as an extension of personal style, noting that a fragrance should complement rather than announce. The brand's fragrance development process emphasizes accessibility, aiming to offer quality scent experiences to a broader audience beyond the fashion house's core customers. This democratizing approach reflects Tahari's understanding of how fragrance functions differently from apparel, where the product serves as a personal signature that can be experienced by everyone one encounters. The fragrances carry the brand's identity through subtle, refined compositions rather than bold statements.
