Heritage
A house, in its own words
Essence of Beauty was first launched by CVS Pharmacy in 2002, beginning with an initial assortment of forty products across fragrance, bath, and body care categories. Over the following years the brand expanded considerably, growing to more than one hundred items. By the early 2010s CVS committed to a deeper fragrance identity for the line. In September 2013 the Essence of Beauty Fine Fragrance Collection expanded to include new scent offerings, with four additional master-crafted fragrances joining the assortment and bringing the total to fourteen distinct scent offerings. Among these 2013 launches were Secret Woods, In The Tropics, Wind Kissed, and Forever Paris, which became some of the most recognizable names in the collection. Later additions such as Japanese Garden continued the brand's pattern of evoking specific places and sensory moods through naming conventions. The line was positioned as a proprietary CVS brand, distributed exclusively through the retailer's physical stores and online at CVS.com, making it one of the more substantial in-house fragrance programs operated by an American drugstore chain. The brand also extended into body mists under the Signature Collection banner, broadening its reach beyond traditional eau de toilette formats. Essence of Beauty was built around the idea that fragrance should function as a small, approachable luxury rather than an exclusive indulgence. CVS developed the line to bring a varied scent wardrobe into the drugstore, giving shoppers access to options suited for mood, season, or setting without venturing into department store territory. The scent names themselves, including Secret Woods, In The Tropics, Wind Kissed, Forever Paris, and Japanese Garden, suggest an aspirational sensibility grounded in travel, nature, and romantic geography. The brand's creative direction favors accessible storytelling, using evocative place and weather references to help shoppers quickly imagine the scent profile. Rather than chasing a single signature olfactory identity, Essence of Beauty operates as a curated catalog of moods. This breadth-first approach reflects a retail-first philosophy: meet the customer where they already shop, and make choosing a fragrance as simple as choosing a candle scent.
