Heritage
A house, in its own words
Biotherm traces its origins to 1952, when biochemist Jeannine Marissal encountered something remarkable during her time near the thermal springs of Molleg, in the South of France. Observing local residents who bathed in these mineral-rich waters, Marissal noted the unusually healthy state of their skin. This observation became the foundation of her life's work. Marissal reportedly became the first person to harness thermal water as a core ingredient in cosmetic formulations, a breakthrough that distinguished Biotherm from conventional skincare brands of the era. Rather than treating skin from the outside in, her approach emphasized working with the skin's inherent biological processes. The thermal springs, fed by rainfall that percolates through Alpine rock over decades, emerge rich in minerals and trace elements. Marissal isolated what she believed to be the active component responsible for the waters' skin benefits, calling it Thermal Plankton. This biological approach to beauty, grounded in scientific observation rather than superstition, positioned Biotherm as a pioneer in what would later become known as biological skincare. The brand's fragrance arm developed later, translating the brand's water-centric philosophy into scented form.
Biotherm approaches fragrance through the lens of its scientific heritage, treating scent as an extension of skin health rather than a purely aesthetic pursuit. The brand believes that what you apply to your skin should support its natural functions, and this conviction extends to their fragrance development. Rather than overwhelming compositions, Biotherm's eaux tend toward freshness and clarity, designed to feel like a natural presence rather than a pronounced statement. The philosophy centers on the concept of biological efficacy, a term borrowed from their skincare heritage. Each fragrance is developed with attention to how it interacts with skin chemistry, recognizing that the same scent can express differently on different wearers. Water remains the symbolic and practical anchor of their creative process. Whether sourcing actual thermal water for formulations or drawing inspiration from aquatic landscapes, Biotherm returns repeatedly to the theme of purity and renewal. Their perfumers work to capture the sensation of water in motion, the crispness of a spring, the cool depth of a lake, translating these sensory experiences into olfactory form.
