Heritage
A house, in its own words
The commercial entity Begim LLC was founded in 1990 in Tashkent as a distributor of high‑end fashion and beauty brands. Ten years later, Gulchekhra Begim, the company’s founder and CEO, decided to translate her lifelong fascination with scent into a brand of her own. In 2014 she introduced Begim Perfumes, positioning the house at the crossroads of Uzbek heritage and French craftsmanship. The brand’s early years were marked by a partnership with Hamid Merati‑Kashani, a perfumer whose résumé includes creations for Valentino, Yves Saint Laurent and Carolina Herrera. Merati‑Kashani’s involvement gave the fledgling house a technical foundation while allowing Gulchekhra to steer the narrative direction. The first releases arrived in 2016 with Bukhara Spirit for Man and Woman and Samarkand Spirit for both genders, fragrances that referenced historic cities along the Silk Road. 2017 saw the addition of Ruby of Temur and KohiNur Diamond, expanding the line’s gender‑fluid offerings. In 2018 the Silk Road series arrived, celebrating the trade route that once linked East and West. After a brief pause, the brand unveiled Stars Dance in 2022, a scent that nods to contemporary Uzbek nightlife while retaining the house’s signature emphasis on story‑telling. Throughout its evolution, Begim has maintained production in France, ensuring that each bottle benefits from the country’s rigorous quality standards while the olfactory DNA remains unmistakably Central Asian. The brand’s trajectory reflects a deliberate blend of regional pride and global expertise, a formula that continues to attract a niche but devoted following. Begim’s creative vision rests on the belief that fragrance can act as a cultural bridge. The house treats each perfume as a narrative capsule, drawing on the myths, textiles and culinary aromas of Uzbekistan while employing the precision of French perfumery. Gulchekhra Begim has spoken of her 1985 encounter with Yves Saint Laurent in Morocco, a moment that reinforced her conviction that personal stories enrich scent creation. This philosophy translates into a focus on authenticity: ingredients such as Uzbek saffron, Turkmen rose, and Kashgar amber are sourced with respect for local harvest practices, and the brand strives to honor the artisans who cultivate them. Sustainability is approached pragmatically; the French production facility follows EU regulations on waste and energy use, and the brand prefers recyclable glass for its bottles. Rather than chasing trends, Begim seeks timelessness, allowing each fragrance to evolve with the wearer. The house also values transparency, offering detailed ingredient lists and encouraging consumers to learn about the cultural references embedded in each name. In this way, Begim positions fragrance not merely as adornment but as an educational experience that celebrates the interconnectedness of geography, history and personal memory.
