Heritage
A house, in its own words
ATUM Fine Fragrance was established in 2021 by Kristin Scott, a fine artist and painter based in Austin, Texas, who transitioned from visual art to fragrance creation. The brand name draws from Atum, the ancient Egyptian creator deity associated with primordial elements, a thematic anchor Scott carried from her painting practice into perfumery. The debut collection arrived the same year the company was founded, launching a slate of genderless scents including Earth, Wild Tobacco, Wanted, Water, Love Always, Air, Hippie Water, and Fire. By treating the house's first year as both a creative statement and a commercial launch, Scott positioned ATUM as a storytelling-driven label from the outset. Retail partnerships followed, with the brand appearing on specialty platforms such as Slate Home alongside its direct-to-consumer presence. The house has remained small and founder-led, with Scott continuing to oversee creative direction from Austin. Scott's approach to perfumery begins with narrative rather than olfactive families. Each ATUM fragrance is conceived as a story or emotional state, with names like Wild Tobacco, Love Always, and Wanted evoking scenes and feelings before they suggest specific notes. The brand describes its work as rooted in storytelling and ritual, a framework inherited from Scott's background as a painter where every canvas carried a conceptual premise. ATUM positions its scents as genderless, rejecting the traditional gendered marketing that has long structured the fragrance industry. Travel-friendly formats, such as the brand's 10ml spray designed for movement, reinforce a philosophy that scent should accompany lived experience rather than sit on a vanity. For Scott, perfume is an extension of the same artistic practice she pursued in galleries, only now the medium is volatile and wearable.
