Heritage
A house, in its own words
Amika was founded in 2007 in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, by Nir and Shay Kadosh. The siblings launched into a haircare category crowded with legacy drugstore names and entrenched professional brands, positioning themselves from day one as industry outsiders with something fresher to say. Chelsea Riggs later joined as a co-founder and currently serves as CEO, helping steer the business through nearly two decades of growth. The lowercase styling of the name is intentional, taken from the Esperanto word for "friend," and that warmth has shaped the brand's identity ever since. Early on, Amika set up shop in Brooklyn salons, letting stylists and clients experience the products in real-world conditions before they ever hit broader retail. That salon-raised approach built a loyal professional following and gave the brand credibility as it expanded into Sephora, Ulta, and international markets. Through the 2010s, Amika grew from a cult indie label into a globally recognized haircare name, eventually branching into hot tools and, more recently, body care. Each expansion has carried forward the brand's signature scent, the same warm, spiced-vanilla profile that has become instantly recognizable to its community of users. Today, Amika remains headquartered in Brooklyn and continues to operate as an independent voice in a category now crowded with fellow indie successes. Amika was built on the conviction that beauty should not chase unattainable perfection. Instead, the brand celebrates what it calls an "idiosyncratic and totally individual version of beauty," a stance that has resonated with consumers tired of aspirational, one-note marketing. The founders entered haircare as outsiders, and that perspective shaped a philosophy centered on inclusivity, professional-grade performance, and unfiltered joy. The brand's signature scent is central to that identity. It runs through haircare, body care, and emerging fragrance offerings as a unifying olfactory thread, turning every product into part of a larger scented ritual rather than a standalone purchase. Amika has consistently positioned itself at the intersection of professional quality and consumer-friendly accessibility, refusing to gatekeep expert-level care behind intimidating packaging or pricing. Playfulness, color, and personality are non-negotiable. Where many beauty houses lean into hushed minimalism, Amika embraces bold hues, irreverent copywriting, and a community-first tone. The result is a house that feels like a friend rather than an authority, which is, fittingly, exactly what the name promises.
