Heritage
A house, in its own words
The origins of Alexandra de Markoff trace to 1948, when Fragrant Fern Cologne entered the market under the Countess Alexandra name. The Countess herself established the brand, lending it her title and aristocratic associations from the beginning. This early cologne laid groundwork for what would become a broader fragrance collection spanning several decades of American perfume history. The house expanded its offerings substantially in 1972 with the introduction of Enigma, its first dedicated women's perfume. This warm, spicy scent signaled a shift toward more complex, atmospheric compositions within the brand's catalog. Subsequent releases including Tiara (1955), Alexandra (1979), and No Regrets (1994) each brought distinct olfactory personalities to the lineup while maintaining consistent threads of femininity and sensuality. The brand operated for years under Revlon Holdings before Parlux Fragrances completed its purchase of the cosmetics and fragrance line, a transaction that placed the house within a portfolio focused specifically on fragrance and beauty brands. The company itself was founded by Martinho Carlos Arruda Botelho, born in 1904 in Rio Claro, São Paulo, Brazil, who named the brand after his mother Alexandra. Alexandra de Markoff approaches perfumery with an unwavering commitment to classic femininity rather than fleeting trends. The brand's scents consistently emphasize warmth, sensuality, and timeless elegance, qualities that appear across decades of releases without chasing seasonal novelty. Enigma, for instance, presents as a warm, spicy nighttime fragrance, while Alexandra itself leads with floral top notes of jonquil, marigold, and roses before revealing deeper layers. This structure reflects an understanding of how fragrance develops on skin over time, creating an intimate experience rather than a one-note impression. The house seems to value staying true to a feminine ideal it established early, resisting pressure to reinvent itself with each passing season. No Regrets continues this approach with its name itself suggesting emotional depth and authenticity over superficial appeal. The Countess Alexandra namesake reinforces an aristocratic sensibility that the brand maintains across its identity, from fragrance composition to presentation.
