    Master Perfumer

    Romain Pantoustier

Romain Pantoustier traded a career in surgery for a career in scent, and the perfume world is richer for it. Born in France, he pivoted from medicine into fragrance design and, in August 2016, co-founded NeZ ZeN in Belgium with his wife Aurélie. The house quickly earned a following among collectors who gravitate toward its handcrafted, small-batch approach. Pantoustier came of age professionally at a moment when independent perfumery was reshaping how bottles reached skin, and he has positioned himself squarely within that shift: a nose who insists on craft, intimacy, and direct connection with the people who wear his work. He holds a doctorate and continues academic research in solid propellant chemistry, a background that gives his formulation work a rigor most perfumers never touch. Today he splits his time between private commissions and the NeZ ZeN catalog, where titles like 1001 Nuits and the Les Exclusive line have built him a quietly devoted audience. A 2023 finalist for the Trophée de l'Indépendant, he remains one of Belgium's most quietly compelling independent voices.

    How Romain composes

Pantoustier's hand tends toward the opulent and the densely constructed. His NeZ ZeN catalog, including 1001 Nuits and the Les Exclusive series, leans into rich resins, smoky woods, and the kind of layered ambers that evolve over many hours on skin. Fans regularly place his work alongside heavyweights from Amouage and Xerjoff, a useful compass for understanding where his ambitions sit. He favors a slow-building architecture over bright openings, preferring compositions that reveal their architecture gradually. His chemistry training shows in the structural clarity of his blends, even when the materials themselves are lavish. Expect depth, expect darkness in places, and expect a drydown that lingers well into the next morning.

    Philosophy

    What drives Romain

Pantoustier builds fragrances the way a surgeon operates: with precision, patience, and respect for what the material actually wants to do. He came to perfumery after decades in another demanding discipline, and that perspective shows. He treats each commission as an exercise in listening, to a brief, to a raw material, to the person who will eventually wear the result. Handcraft matters to him not as a marketing line but as a method, a way of staying close enough to the process to course-correct in real time. His academic background in chemistry gives him an unusually structured approach to formulation, yet his creative decisions remain rooted in emotion and narrative. He believes a fragrance should reward attention, and he builds compositions that open slowly rather than announce themselves. Collectors return to his work because the bottles feel personal, almost like letters addressed to a specific sensibility.
