Jessica Buchanan
Jessica September Buchanan grew up in British Columbia, where her deep knowledge of essential oils first took root. In 2000, she founded 1000 Flowers in Canada, originally focused on pure essential oils and natural products. The call of Grasse eventually pulled her to the historic heart of French perfumery, where she now runs her perfumer's organ from a shop lined with hundreds of scent vials. Beyond creating her own fragrances, she teaches at the 1000 Flowers Academy in Grasse, shaping the next generation of professional noses. Buchanan calls herself an ethical perfumer, a philosophy she shares with the legendary Michel Roudnitska: that those who craft fine fragrance carry a responsibility beyond commerce. She also offers personalized perfume creation and consulting services from her Grasse atelier.

How Jessica composes
Natural perfumery defines Buchanan's technical approach. She draws on her early expertise with essential oils to build fragrances from botanical materials, favoring transparency and authenticity over synthetic complexity. Her nose works with the inherent character of natural ingredients, understanding their imperfections and variations as features rather than flaws. The result is perfumery that feels grounded, honest, and intimately connected to the earth.
Philosophy
What drives Jessica
Buchanan believes that perfumers bear a weight of responsibility that extends far beyond creating something beautiful. For her, ethical perfumery means understanding exactly what goes into every bottle, where each ingredient comes from, and what impact the creative process has on people and the planet. She champions transparency in an industry that has long obscured its supply chains. Her work suggests that responsibility and artistry are not in tension but are, in fact, inseparable. This conviction shapes every formulation that leaves her organ.
