    Bram Niessink

Bram Niessink was born and raised in the Netherlands, where the cosmetics world shaped his earliest memories long before he learned to question it. That tension, growing up inside an industry he would eventually push back against, runs through his story. In 2014, he enrolled at AMFI in Amsterdam to study Fashion Management, trading one creative education for another. But the real turning point came on a trip to Egypt with his grandfather, walking through temples and markets where ancient oils and ritual unguents still carry meaning. The encounter rewired his sense of what fragrance could be. In 2018, at twenty-eight, he founded FUGAZZI Fragrances in Amsterdam, a house built on the premise that mainstream perfumery had lost its appetite for surprise. He had been composing scents since 2011, refining an instinct for raw materials and mood before the brand gave him a platform. FUGAZZI opened its first flagship store and relocated creative operations to Los Angeles, positioning Niessink as one of the more restless independent voices working today. His path from cosmetics-adjacent kid to Amsterdam-trained creative director to founder of his own perfume house reads less like a career plan and more like a series of honest refusals.

    How Bram composes

Niessink leans on materials with history. Ancient oils and resins, the kind once traded along the Nile, anchor many of his compositions, paired with bolder modern accords that pull them into unexpected territory. His work tends toward the sculptural rather than the decorative, building fragrances with clear architecture and sharp edges. He gravitates toward ingredients that announce themselves: smoky resins, dense florals, ambers with weight, spices that refuse to behave as background. The result is a signature that reads as confident, sometimes confrontational, never anonymous. Each scent seems designed to leave an impression rather than please a committee. His style prizes specificity and nerve over crowd-pleasing balance, giving FUGAZZI its characteristic sense of intention.

    Philosophy

    What drives Bram

Niessink makes no secret of what drives him: an impatience with convention. He believes the fragrance industry has grown too comfortable, too polished, too willing to repeat its own formulas. FUGAZZI was conceived as a corrective, a space where curiosity and instinct take priority over market research. He approaches each composition as a mood first and a product second, asking what feeling a scent should conjure rather than what note families the algorithm expects. Ancient rituals, forgotten materials, and the emotional residue of specific places all feed his brief. He is drawn to perfume as a vehicle for atmosphere and provocation, something closer to art than accessory. The willingness to challenge what a fragrance is supposed to do, and for whom, sits at the core of how he works.
