Heritage
A house, in its own words
Sunnamusk began in 2009 when five brothers set up a modest stall on the streets of Whitechapel, East London. Their goal was to bring the scent profile of Arabia to a neighbourhood known for its multicultural markets. Early sales relied on imported oils and a rotating selection of third‑party blends, but the brothers quickly learned the nuances of raw material quality and customer preference. By 2015 the family had secured a small workshop in London and launched their first in‑house perfume, marking a shift from reseller to creator. The brand’s growth accelerated during the COVID‑19 lockdown, when the brothers used the pause in retail traffic to develop a line of scented candles and oil diffusers, expanding the portfolio beyond traditional spray perfumes. In 2022 they released Afgan Oud, a composition that highlighted a rare oud variant sourced from the Afghan highlands, and in 2023 followed with Golden Dust, a fragrance that combined amber and spice in a single, balanced accord. The 2024 launch of Majestic showcased a more complex structure, integrating notes of leather, incense and a subtle musk base, reflecting the brand’s confidence in layering techniques. Participation in the 2025 Maison du Parfum (MTF) exhibition placed Sunnamusk alongside established European houses, confirming its status as a serious player in the niche market. Throughout its evolution, the company has remained family‑run, with co‑founder Kazi Abidur Rahman frequently cited as the public face of the brand, while his brothers manage production, sourcing and distribution. The firm continues to operate from a London studio, where new scents are tested on a small panel before release, preserving the hands‑on approach that defined its early days.
Sunnamusk’s creative vision rests on a dialogue between two cultures: the aromatic heritage of the Arabian world and the pragmatic design ethos of British craft. The founders describe their work as an attempt to translate the textures of desert night, spice souks and historic caravan routes into bottle‑friendly compositions. Rather than chasing trends, the brand selects ingredients that have a clear provenance, allowing each note to tell its own story. Sustainability is addressed through careful sourcing; the house prefers suppliers who can trace raw materials back to farms or cooperatives that practice responsible harvesting. Transparency extends to the lab, where the perfumers—though not individually named—work with a small team to blend by hand, adjusting ratios until the scent aligns with the intended mood. The brand’s values include family collaboration, respect for traditional olfactory structures, and a commitment to making complex scents accessible without sacrificing depth. This philosophy informs every release, from the bright citrus opening of Golden Musk to the lingering amber trail of Amber Rose (2021).
