Heritage
A house, in its own words
Scentbird emerged from a practical observation about how people discover new fragrances. In 2013, Mariya Nurislamova and her co-founders Sergei Gusev, Andrei Rebrov, and Rachel ten Brink established the company in Monroe, New Jersey. The founders initially built a scent recommendation platform in 2014, designed to help people navigate the overwhelming world of fragrance options. Almost immediately, users began requesting ways to sample the fragrances recommended to them. This organic demand shaped the company's evolution into a subscription service. The founders recognized that fragrance sampling historically required either expensive full bottles or inconvenient visits to department stores, creating barriers for curious consumers. Scentbird positioned itself as a discovery-first alternative, sending curated monthly samples to subscribers who could explore before committing. The company grew primarily through word-of-mouth and social media engagement, with @Scentbird building a following among fragrance enthusiasts. Over time, Scentbird expanded beyond simple discovery to include original content series and proprietary fragrance lines, establishing itself as a multifaceted player in the fragrance industry rather than merely a sampling service. Scentbird operates on the principle that fragrance discovery should be accessible and low-commitment. The founders believed that consumers should not have to purchase full bottles to explore new scents, and that sampling should precede any purchasing decision. This discovery-first philosophy shapes how the platform approaches curation and recommendation. The quiz-based system reflects a broader commitment to personalization, matching users with fragrances based on their stated preferences rather than promoting specific products. The company emphasizes education alongside product discovery, reportedly believing that informed consumers make better choices. Scentbird's original content series, including Scent World, features conversations with perfumers and fragrance enthusiasts, suggesting a philosophy rooted in sharing knowledge rather than simply selling products. The platform maintains relationships with numerous fragrance houses, offering subscribers access to a diverse library without requiring ownership of each scent. This approach reflects values of exploration, accessibility, and consumer empowerment in a category traditionally dominated by high-pressure retail environments.
