Heritage
A house, in its own words
The Roberto Ugolini fragrance line emerged in 2019 from an unexpected collaboration. Roberto Ugolini, whose primary craft centers on creating bespoke footwear for a global clientele of discerning clients, had been working as a master shoemaker in Florence for years before venturing into perfumery. According to available sources, Ugolini began creating perfumes at the age of 18, suggesting a parallel passion that would later mature into this dedicated collection. His partnership with Herbert Stricker, identified as a perfume connoisseur, provided the complementary expertise needed to translate shoemaking sensibilities into liquid form. The brand arrived in the US market through Gentleman's Gazette, which established itself as the exclusive American retailer for Roberto Ugolini Fragrances. This pairing made sense given the shared audience of classic style enthusiasts who appreciate quality craftsmanship and attention to detail. The Nose Behind, another specialty retailer, also carries the collection and describes the fragrance series as an attempt to capture Florentine flair through scent. Since 2019, the house has released at least ten distinct fragrances, with new additions continuing through 2024.
Roberto Ugolini approaches fragrance creation with the same principles that govern his shoemaking practice. Each scent in the collection reflects an attention to detail and a commitment to quality materials that he developed over decades working with fine leather. The brand philosophy centers on translating sensory experiences into olfactory form, capturing moments and atmospheres rather than simply combining pleasant notes. Fragrances like Giardino di Boboli draw from the historic gardens of Florence, attempting to evoke the experience of walking through those terraced landscapes. The naming convention of the collection itself suggests a philosophy rooted in traditional craftsmanship, with shoe styles serving as metaphors for different facets of masculine elegance. Rather than following seasonal trends or market demands, the house appears to create scents that reflect specific memories, locations, or concepts meaningful to its founder. This personal approach means each fragrance carries narrative weight beyond its aromatic composition.
