A house, in its own words
Musk's founding story sits within a much older story. The word 'musk' originally described a pungent substance secreted by the gland of the musk deer, used for centuries across ancient civilizations as a prized scent believed to carry mystical properties. By the late 1800s, researchers began developing synthetic alternatives to reproduce musky notes without animal harvesting, a shift that eventually made musk a foundational building block of modern perfumery. The most antique known olfactory formulation inspired by musk is attributed to the House of Houbigant, operating since 1775, with a formula from 1923 reportedly using over a hundred musk-related ingredients. Musk the brand enters this lineage in 2019, debuting with Queen and positioning itself as a contemporary interpreter of an ingredient whose history in fragrance spans centuries. Between 2019 and 2022, the house expanded steadily, releasing Carmen and Carmen Turquoise in 2021, alongside Private Oud, Sensetive, Opera, and Silver, then following with the EGO trilogy (CHARM, MAGIC, INTENSE) in 2022, building a catalog dedicated almost exclusively to variations on a single olfactory theme. Musk approaches perfumery as a study of one ingredient rather than a survey of many. Where most houses build identity through a wide portfolio of scent families, Musk narrows its focus to the musky base note and the many moods it can carry, from warm and lingering to clean and radiant. The brand's creative vision appears rooted in demonstrating how a single scent family can sustain artistic range, whether through the dramatic positioning of Queen, the exotic promise of Private Oud, or the more playful EGO series. This singular focus also reflects a philosophy of accessibility within luxury: synthetic musks have democratized an ingredient once reserved for the wealthiest patrons who could afford natural deer musk, and Musk appears to embrace that democratic inheritance by making the category its entire reason for being.
