Heritage
A house, in its own words
Mona Isotupa founded Hetkinen in 2018 after a career in design and sales management. She wanted a brand that could speak through scent as fluently as it spoke through form. The first collection arrived in early 2019 and featured three perfume oils that drew on Finnish pine, birch and Japanese cherry blossom. By the end of 2020 the house added a line of soy‑based candles and reed diffusers, expanding the concept of scent as spatial design. In 2021 Hetkinen secured placement in boutique retailers across Scandinavia and Japan, marking its first international distribution. The 2022 launch of Amuse Air and Summer Seizure introduced a fresh, airy character that responded to post‑pandemic desires for open interiors. 2023 saw the release of Shizuka and Majime, two fragrances that paired Nordic mosses with subtle Japanese tea notes, reinforcing the brand’s cross‑cultural dialogue. Throughout its growth the company has kept production in Finland, using a small laboratory in Turku to maintain control over formulation and quality. The brand’s evolution reflects a steady commitment to natural materials, design‑forward packaging and a quiet, purposeful aesthetic. Hetkinen approaches perfumery as a practice of clarity. The team selects each note for the feeling it evokes, then distills the material to its purest expression. This method mirrors the Japandi principle of simplicity, where excess is removed and function becomes art. The brand values vegan formulation, which means every ingredient originates from plants or renewable sources, and it avoids synthetic fixatives that could cloud the scent’s intent. Sustainability guides sourcing decisions; raw materials are harvested from responsibly managed Finnish forests or from Japanese growers who practice seasonal picking. Hetkinen also treats scent as a shared environment, designing products that influence a room’s mood rather than only an individual’s skin. This perspective encourages users to consider how aroma interacts with light, texture and space, turning everyday moments into quiet experiences.
