Heritage
A house, in its own words
The story of monoi begins long before the modern perfume market, rooted in the daily lives of Tahitian women who harvested tiare flowers and steeped them in coconut oil to create a nourishing, scented elixir. Historical accounts from the early nineteenth century describe the oil as a sacred preparation used to protect skin and hair from the sun and sea. For centuries the practice was passed down within families, particularly among the Vahini women of the islands, who guarded the formula as a private family secret. In the early 2000s a small group of entrepreneurs began documenting the traditional method, aiming to preserve the technique while meeting contemporary standards of purity and sustainability. Reportedly, the brand Hei Poa was formally organized in 2024, choosing a name that references the hidden knowledge of the original monoi preparation. The following year, 2025, marked the public launch of both the monoi skin oil and a collection of eight perfumes, each named to reflect a facet of Polynesian flora or emotion, such as Sensualité Idylique and Elixir d'Amour. The launch was supported by a limited‑edition release in Taiwan through the Groupe GM distribution network, signaling the brand’s first step into Asian markets. Since then, Hei Poa has expanded its product line to include additional scented body care items, while maintaining a focus on the original monoi oil recipe. The brand’s growth has been documented in regional retail listings and fragrance databases, confirming its presence in both online and boutique settings across several continents. Hei Poa frames its work as a dialogue between heritage and contemporary sensibility. The label states that it seeks to honor Polynesian beauty rituals by preserving the integrity of the monoi extraction process and by limiting synthetic additives. Sustainability is expressed through the use of locally sourced coconuts and tiare blossoms, harvested by small‑scale growers who follow traditional picking cycles. The brand’s creative direction emphasizes scent as memory, aiming to evoke the feeling of a Tahitian sunrise or a breezy lagoon rather than to chase fleeting trends. Transparency is a core value; ingredient lists are published on the website, and the company reports that each batch of oil is tested for purity and natural SPF content. In its fragrance line, Hei Poa pairs the monoi base with complementary notes such as vanilla, ylang‑ylang and tropical fruits, allowing the oil’s innate aroma to serve as a foundation rather than a backdrop. The philosophy extends to packaging, where recyclable materials are chosen to reduce environmental impact, reflecting a broader commitment to the islands’ ecological wellbeing.
