Heritage
A house, in its own words
The Clive Christian story begins not in 1999, but in 1872, when William Sparks Thomson established The Crown Perfumery Company on The Strand in London. Thomson served high society clientele, including Queen Victoria herself, and earned the remarkable distinction of being the only perfume house ever granted permission to use the royal crown on its packaging. This royal warrant placed the house among the most prestigious in Victorian England. The brand lay dormant for decades until 1999, when British designer Clive Christian OBE discovered the historic Crown Perfumery archives and saw an opportunity. Rather than simply reviving old formulas, Christian reimagined the house entirely, launching what would become the Original Collection. His vision married Victorian craftsmanship with modern British luxury, creating perfumes that felt both timeless and contemporary. The house has since expanded its offerings while maintaining that founding commitment to exceptional concentration and quality.
Clive Christian operates from a simple conviction: perfume should be an event, not a background note. The house rejects the concept of subtlety for its own sake, instead pursuing fragrances that announce themselves with authority and endure for hours. This philosophy manifests in unusually high perfume concentrations across the range. The brand positions itself not as a fashion accessory but as a piece of wearable heritage, each bottle carrying the weight of its Victorian predecessor. Clive Christian the designer brought an eye for British heritage and a taste for refinement to the project, understanding that luxury fragrance customers seek distinction rather than mere pleasantness. The house speaks to those who want their scent to be remembered long after they've left a room.
