    Tomoo Inaba

Tomoo Inaba did not arrive at perfumery through convention. Working in events and exhibition direction through his twenties, he pivoted in the mid-2000s by founding a fragrance distribution company, immersing himself in the industry from the supply side. He never attended formal perfumery school, building his olfactory knowledge instead through hands-on trade work and relentless self-study. Inaba also established profice.jp, which grew into Japan's largest fragrance portal, making him one of his country's most influential voices in perfume journalism before he ever composed a single scent. His transition from critic to creator came through the Zoologist brand, for which he crafted Nightingale. The success of that floral chypre opened doors and led to subsequent creations for brands including Beau Kwon. Inaba now occupies a rare position: a self-taught perfumer who understands fragrance as both artist and audience.

    How Tomoo composes

Inaba specializes in bridging traditional Japanese botanical elements with contemporary fragrance construction. His compositions tend toward restraint and precision, using materials not as individual features but as a cohesive whole. He works frequently with florals, as demonstrated in Nightingale, and demonstrates particular skill in balancing delicate and structural elements. His approach avoids excess, favoring intentional minimalism where every note earns its presence. The five fragrances credited to him carry a consistent thread of thoughtful layering and quiet confidence.

    Philosophy

    What drives Tomoo

Inaba approaches fragrance creation with the critical eye of a reviewer. He knows what works, what falls flat, and what feels honest because he spent years articulating those judgments for readers. His work reflects a belief that scent should communicate something specific rather than simply smell pleasant. Coming to perfumery later in life, he carries none of the traditional constraints, which allows him to interpret briefs and materials with genuine independence. His philosophy centers on clarity of intent and the idea that every fragrance tells a story only it can tell.
