Miriam Vareldzis
Miriam Vareldzis arrived in the fragrance industry through an unexpected door. After studying design at the University of Oregon, she shifted direction in 1991 and joined Gryphon Development, where Ann Gottlieb, one of the most respected names in American perfumery, took her under her wing. The mentorship shaped her understanding of fragrance as both art and craft. Vareldzis later moved to International Flavors & Fragrances, working alongside world-class perfumers while developing expertise in sustainable, high-impact fragrance creation. For three decades she operated largely behind the scenes, contributing to major launches at global houses while deepening her knowledge of natural raw materials and responsible sourcing. The transition to indie perfumery came when she founded 40notes Perfume, an independent line reflecting her artistic voice outside corporate constraints. She followed this by establishing Palette Naturals, where she continues to blend her love of natural perfumery with her design sensibility. Vareldzis speaks about her career in the industry with refreshing candor, making her one of the more outspoken voices in American fragrance design today.

How Miriam composes
Her style favors restraint and clarity. Vareldzis gravitates toward clean constructions where each ingredient earns its place. She works frequently with botanicals and natural extracts, selecting materials for their storytelling potential as much as their olfactory qualities. Warm woods, resinous botanicals, and carefully calibrated citrus appear often in her compositions. She avoids heaviness, preferring scents that feel considered and unhurried. Her indie work through Palette Naturals demonstrates a preference for subtle complexity over projection warfare, with fragrances that reward close attention rather than announcing themselves across a room.
Philosophy
What drives Miriam
Vareldzis believes fragrance should work with the body, not overpower it. She approaches each creation as a form of communication, asking what a scent should say and who it should reach before touching a single raw material. Her background in design informs a visual thinking she applies to olfactory composition: balance, contrast, and a clear point of view. Natural perfumery grounds her practice. She insists on knowing where her materials originate and considers sustainability a non-negotiable, not a marketing angle. Vareldzis also values accessibility. She has spoken openly about making the industry less opaque, demystifying perfumery for those curious about how fragrances actually come together.
