    Master Perfumer

    Matthew Zhuk

Matthew Zhuk grew up in Carleton Heights, Ottawa, where his fascination with fragrance first took root during his teenage years at St. Pius X High School. Alongside his partner Tanya Zhuk, he co-founded EX IDOLO, the London-based niche house that began turning heads around 2013. Their work quickly distinguished itself through an uncompromising approach to craft and an unusual creative partnership. Zhuk's career has spanned both private commissions and commercial releases, including bespoke work for Barneys and Aedes De Venustas. Earlier in his career, he contributed to Atelier Cologne, building experience across different corners of the industry. Based in London but shaped by his Canadian upbringing, he brings a distinctive perspective to niche perfumery, one informed by diverse influences and a deep commitment to the medium.

    The signature

    How Matthew composes

Resinous, smoky, woody, and spicy elements define much of Zhuk's work. He builds compositions with architectural confidence, layering depth that unfolds over time on the skin. His use of raw Asian ingredients gives his fragrances a particular character, balancing warmth with an almost meditative stillness. Those who encounter his creations often note their longevity and the way they evolve throughout the day. Whether working on an intimate bespoke commission or a signature release, Zhuk favors materials that carry weight and meaning rather than novelty.

    Philosophy

    What drives Matthew

Zhuk treats each fragrance as an opportunity to tell a story, working closely with Tanya to develop compositions that feel both intimate and transportive. He gravitates toward raw materials that carry history and presence, particularly those sourced from Asia. His philosophy centers on authenticity over trend, creating scents that reward sustained attention rather than making immediate impressions only to fade. For Zhuk, perfumery is a dialogue between maker and wearer, one he approaches with patience and genuine curiosity about how scent can mark moments in someone's life.
