    Laura Oberwetter

Laura Oberwetter didn't set out to become a perfumer. After years of studying smells while others explored food, she enrolled at the Institute of Art and Olfaction and began formulating tests that eventually became Clue Perfumery. In 2023, she partnered with childhood friend and designer Caleb Vanden Boom to launch the Chicago-based independent house. The collaboration brought her experimental approach to scent into the spotlight. Merz Apothecary and LuckyScent have since championed her work, placing Clue among the most anticipated niche releases. Oberwetter approaches fragrance as a narrative medium, not just a product category.

    How Laura composes

Her compositions favor materials that surprise rather than comfort. She layers unexpected accords to create scents that feel both strange and inevitable. The results read as sensory riddles, fragrances that reward close attention and repeat wear. Her work resists easy categorization, existing somewhere between conceptual art and wearable perfume.

    Philosophy

    What drives Laura

Oberwetter rejects the notion that fragrance should simply smell pleasant. She designs perfumes as puzzles, inviting the wearer to decode layered meaning. This intellectual approach shapes every creation, pushing boundaries on what a perfume can communicate. She works closely with Vanden Boom, translating visual concepts into olfactory form and back again. The dialogue between senses drives her process.
