Juan Perez
Juan M. Pérez Feliciano grew up surrounded by the lush botanical wealth of Puerto Rico. His formal training lies in plant sciences, a background that gives his nose a rare botanical literacy. He describes himself as self-taught in perfumery, learning the craft through hands-on experimentation after a college chemistry class first sparked his interest in molecular scent creation. In 2012, he launched The Exotic Island Perfumer, a fragrance line rooted in Caribbean botanicals. His work caught the attention of independent houses like Zoologist Perfumes and EnVoyage Perfumes, for whom he created signature compositions. He later co-founded Terra Mater Perfumes, further exploring his connection between horticulture and fragrance. Perez represents a growing movement of perfumers challenging the industry's traditional structures, bringing a distinctly Caribbean perspective to niche perfumery.

How Juan composes
Perez favors bold tropical florals, green plant accords, and unexpected spice combinations that reflect his Caribbean roots. His compositions layer unexpected ingredients with precision, creating fragrances that feel both grounded and adventurous. He gravitates toward natural materials but combines them with a chemist's understanding of molecular interaction, producing scents that shift and reveal themselves over time. His style balances raw botanical authenticity with technical precision, resulting in work that feels rooted in place yet universally resonant.
Philosophy
What drives Juan
Perez approaches fragrance as an extension of his relationship with plants. His botanical background shapes how he perceives and constructs scents, treating ingredients not as isolated notes but as living elements connected to soil, climate, and place. He rejects perfumery that exists in isolation from its origins. His work often centers on Caribbean botanicals and tropical florals, though his vision extends beyond simple geography. Perez advocates for decolonizing scent, questioning whose stories the industry has historically centered. He creates from a place of curiosity rather than convention, letting his horticultural intuition guide formulation.
