    Master Perfumer

    Danielle Fleming

Danielle Fleming did not set out to become a perfumer. She began as a graduate student studying psychology, searching for a different kind of practice. What she found was scent. The shift was not accidental: Fleming recognized early that fragrance operates as a language of the subconscious, carrying memory and emotion in ways that fascinated her both intellectually and professionally. Over the past two decades, she has built a singular career at the intersection of psychology and olfaction. She founded Noteology, a boutique perfumery and custom fragrance studio, alongside Olfactif, the sample subscription service that has introduced countless fragrance lovers to independent and artisan perfumers. Fleming has spoken on scent festivals and panels, bringing her psychologically-informed perspective to wider conversations about how we experience smell. Her work spans both the intimate craft of bespoke perfumery and commercial fragrance creation, including compositions for Note Fragrances. Rather than following a traditional path into the industry, Fleming carved her own, guided by an understanding of what scents do to people, not merely how they smell. She represents a generation of American perfumers who arrived through unconventional doors and changed what the profession can look like.

    How Danielle composes

Fleming's style reflects her background: thoughtful, structured, and emotionally intelligent. She favors well-balanced compositions where each element serves a purpose, rarely indulging in excess for the sake of drama. Her work tends toward clarity and wearability without sacrificing depth, appealing to fragrance lovers who appreciate nuance over spectacle. Ingredients: she draws from both natural and synthetic materials, selecting based on the emotional effect rather than origin alone. Citrus, woods, and clean musks appear frequently in her work, often composed with an American restraint that avoids the heavier traditions of French perfumery.

    Philosophy

    What drives Danielle

Fleming approaches fragrance as applied psychology. She designs with the wearer in mind, considering not just aesthetic appeal but emotional resonance and the private narratives each scent might unlock. For her, perfumery is less about following trends or house traditions and more about understanding what a fragrance needs to communicate. She resists the notion that great fragrance requires expensive materials alone. Instead, she focuses on intention and composition: how notes relate, how they evolve on skin, how they make someone feel. This psychology-first stance shapes everything from brief to bottle. Fleming has spoken about scent as a form of non-verbal communication, a lens that informs her creative process from concept through final formulation.
