Anne Nelson Sanford
Anne Nelson Sanford arrived in Chicago in 1973, the youngest of three sisters, and by age four had traded the Midwest for Miami's salt air and perpetual light. That early immersion in subtropical abundance, ripe mangoes, night-blooming jasmine, the mineral tang of ocean spray, would quietly seed everything that followed. In 2001, she opened an apothecary in Florida devoted exclusively to natural and organic skincare and body care, a quietly radical act at a time when the words "clean beauty" had barely entered the vocabulary. The apothecary became a laboratory, a classroom, and a proving ground. She taught herself formulation through repetition and failure, learning how essential oils behaved on living skin rather than in textbooks. From that practice, LURK was born: a fragrance and body care house she co-founded with her partner James, built on botanical integrity and a refusal to apologize for using nature's raw materials. Alongside her work with LURK, she has contributed to Androgynous By Design, a project exploring scent as a fluid, genderless language. Her path is self-made, rooted in retail rather than the grandes écoles of Grasse, and all the more distinctive for it.

The signature
How Anne composes
The LURK signature leans warm, skin-close, and botanical, with an emphasis on resins, woods, and green notes that read as grown rather than synthesized. Expect tonka, oud, frankincense, and tobacco leaf, but also unexpected flashes: salty sea air, metallic iris, the green bitterness of fig leaf. Her fragrances tend to wear close rather than project widely, favoring intimacy over spectacle. She builds with a perfumer's patience, often letting accords macerate longer than industry standards demand, and she is known for textures that feel almost edible, like warmed skin after sun. The Androgynous By Design line pushes further into conceptual territory, exploring the space between traditionally masculine and feminine raw materials until the categories dissolve. Across both projects, a respect for restraint holds the compositions together. Nothing announces itself; everything earns its place.
Philosophy
What drives Anne
Anne Nelson Sanford believes fragrance should be honest about where it comes from. Her work begins with whole plants, not abstracted molecules, and she treats each botanical as a collaborator with a temperament. She is suspicious of excess, of compositions that try to please everyone, and of the notion that natural means simple. Her formulas can be intricate, layered, even challenging, because she trusts the wearer to meet the scent halfway. Gender, in her view, is irrelevant to the act of smelling good. Through Androgynous By Design and the LURK catalog, she insists that scent is a personal vocabulary, not a costume. The best perfume, she has said, is the one that makes the person wearing it feel more like themselves, not less. Sustainability is not a marketing layer but a structural decision, from sourcing to packaging. She wants the bottle on the shelf to reflect what is inside it.
