Heritage
A house, in its own words
The story of Taylor of Old Bond Street begins with Jeremiah Taylor, who established his barbershop on London's fashionable Bond Street on September 1, 1854. During the Victorian era, Bond Street was among the most prestigious addresses in the city, attracting clientele from the upper echelons of English society. Taylor's establishment quickly gained a reputation for quality grooming products and personal service, laying the foundation for what would become a enduring British institution. The company remained under Taylor family stewardship through much of its history, maintaining manufacturing traditions passed down through generations. In 1950, the company opened its No. 74 Jermyn Street location, a store that would become particularly significant to the brand's identity. Jermyn Street itself was renowned as the heart of traditional English tailoring and gentlemen's outfitters, making it a fitting home for Taylor's expansion. The company celebrated its 150th anniversary in 2004, marking over a century and a half of continuous operation. In 2003, the house released No. 74 Victorian Lime, a fragrance created to honor the Jermyn Street store's heritage. The most significant transformation came in 2011, when Taylor of Old Bond Street launched the Jermyn Street Collection, a curated rebrand marking their entrance into the modern fragrance market while honoring their barbershop roots. The collection represented a deliberate effort to translate the brand's traditional grooming expertise into a fragrance format accessible beyond their physical locations.
Taylor of Old Bond Street approaches fragrance creation through the lens of daily ritual rather than occasion. Their philosophy centers on the belief that grooming and scent should be an integral part of a gentleman's routine, not a fleeting statement. The house draws direct inspiration from the sensory world of a traditional barbershop, where familiar scents evoke comfort, competence, and continuity. Rather than chasing trend, Taylor of Old Bond Street develops fragrances that possess timeless appeal, often centered on classic notes like sandalwood, lime, and lavender that have appeared in their product lines for decades. The brand's approach to fragrance reflects their broader grooming philosophy: products should be reliable, well-made, and accessible. They reject the notion that quality grooming requires complexity or novelty. Each fragrance is designed to function as part of a complete grooming ritual, where scent complements the shave, the skincare, and the overall experience of preparing for the day. This integration of fragrance with traditional wet shaving products defines their approach to the market. The house values the heritage of English perfumery, which historically emphasized practical, wearable scents over avant-garde compositions.
