A house, in its own words
Roxana Villa began her fragrance journey after years of studying botanical chemistry and natural aromatherapy. In the early 2000s she earned certification as a Natural Perfumer, a credential that requires rigorous training in plant extraction and safety standards. She launched Roxana Illuminated Perfume in California, initially operating from a modest workshop in Agoura Hills. The first public release, Vera, arrived in 2007 and introduced the brand’s commitment to pure, plant‑based ingredients. Over the next decade the house expanded its portfolio with Hedera helix in 2011, a tribute to ivy’s green freshness, and Impromptu in 2012, a spontaneous blend of wildflowers and citrus. In 2015 the studio moved to Santa Monica, a location that offered greater access to coastal botanicals and a creative community. The move coincided with a refinement of the brand’s visual language, inspired by 15th‑century illuminated manuscripts, a nod reflected in the name “Illuminated.” 2022 marked the release of The Green Knight, a fragrance that references medieval legend while staying firmly rooted in modern botanical sourcing. Throughout its evolution, Roxana Illuminated Perfume has remained a boutique operation, selling directly to collectors through its website and a limited‑edition Etsy store, and maintaining a personal appointment system for bespoke consultations.
The house views perfume as a bridge between the natural world and personal memory. Roxana Villa describes her work as an alchemical practice that respects the integrity of each plant, allowing its true character to shine without synthetic shortcuts. She emphasizes transparency, listing each botanical component on the label and sourcing raw materials from growers who practice sustainable harvesting. The brand’s mission is to help wearers reconnect with their essential nature, inviting them to explore scent as a form of quiet meditation. Rather than chasing trends, Roxana Illuminated Perfume follows a seasonal rhythm, creating new scents when the harvest aligns with the intended olfactory story. This approach reflects a belief that authenticity in fragrance arises from patience, observation, and respect for the cycles of growth.
