Arthur Benjamin Sugarman launched what would become Ben Sherman in 1963, initially focused on the shirt business. His Brighton-based operation specialized in button-down collar shirts crafted from Oxford cloth, a weave that would become a signature of the brand. The timing proved fortuitous.
