A house, in its own words
Christian Petrovich grew up immersed in modeling work that took him across the globe, but his passion lay in fashion and fragrance. After reportedly forming a connection with a Moroccan artisan family, he began developing his perfumery skills through what sources describe as a long apprenticeship in craftsmanship. He initially focused on creating bespoke fragrances for wealthy European clients and celebrities under private arrangements, a period during which he honed his approach to formulation and storytelling through scent. In 2014, Petrovich established Argos Fragrances, naming the house after the all-seeing Greek giant Argus Panoptes. He chose mythology as his primary creative framework, believing ancient stories offered a rich vocabulary for olfactory expression. The brand remained relatively quiet for its first years, allowing Petrovich time to refine his process before going public with a broader collection in 2018. Fragrantica lists 29 perfumes in the Argos catalog, though only a fraction are featured on the brand's own site. The house has maintained a steady release schedule through the mid-2020s, with entries like Triumph of Bacchus (2019), Danaë (2021), and Fall of Phaeton (2024) marking different phases of the brand's evolution.
Argos Fragrances treats each scent as a vehicle for narrative rather than simply a pleasant smell. The brand's core belief centers on mythology as a source of timeless storytelling, with ancient Greek and Roman legends providing the emotional architecture for their fragrances. Petrovich has described wanting to transport wearers to another era through carefully constructed olfactory experiences. The brand states that a minimum of two years goes into developing each fragrance, a timeline that reflects a commitment to slow craftsmanship over rapid production. Their stated goal involves making memorable fragrances using the purest and finest ingredients available. The house rejects the idea that niche perfumery should be exclusionary; their language emphasizes accessibility across skill levels, from the casual enthusiast to the most experienced collector. Each ingredient reportedly undergoes deliberate selection, with no component included without serving the story the fragrance aims to tell. This approach prioritizes coherence of vision over shock value or trend-chasing.
