Lionel Nesbitt
Lionel Nesbitt did not set out to become a perfumer. A Biology degree in hand, he sent resumes to every science-related listing he could find. One of those applications landed at Haarmann and Reimer, and the industry quite literally found him. He describes the start as accidental, but what followed was anything but passive. Nesbitt moved through analytical and production roles before reaching creation, building a technical foundation that would shape how he constructs fragrances for decades to come. Today he serves as a senior perfumer at Berje Inc, where he formulates and creates across fragrance categories. Beyond the lab, Nesbitt holds a seat on the American Society of Perfumers board and actively supports BlackPerfumers, an initiative founded in 2020 to amplify visibility for perfumers of color. His path from reluctant applicant to industry steward reads less like a calling and more like a collision between preparation and opportunity.

How Lionel composes
Nesbitt's work favors clarity and lift. His reinvention of Blocki Esprit D'Amour showcased a talent for modernizing florals without losing their emotional core, keeping the composition fresh and vibrant rather than heavy or nostalgic. The analytical background he built early in his career likely informs this precision, the ability to identify which elements can be refreshed and which must remain intact. He gravitates toward materials that allow space and movement within a composition, favoring clean transitions over dense, layered constructions.
Philosophy
What drives Lionel
Nesbitt has described himself as someone who gravitates toward anything creative, and that openness defines his working philosophy. He does not chase a single aesthetic. Instead, he approaches each brief as an open question, letting the materials and the brief guide the direction rather than imposing a predetermined style. His reformulation of Blocki Esprit D'Amour captures this well: he did not erase the original's romanticism but reimagined it as something airy and modern, proving he values heritage without being bound by it.
