    The Story of Mackenzie Reilly

Mackenzie Reilly spent her childhood in New York surrounded by creative parents, her father a filmmaker and her mother in advertising, who nurtured her love of cooking, gardening, and the natural world. At sixteen, everything changed when she encountered Dzing! by L'Artisan Parfumeur, a niche fragrance conjuring the aroma of a circus. 'Someone designs these,' she realized, and suddenly perfumery became her singular ambition. She earned her degree in International Studies from Trinity College, with stints at Trinity in Paris, where she studied the history of perfumery and spice trade, before landing at luxury publishing house Assouline. Her unconventional background still opened doors at IFF, where she joined in 2010 as assistant to the Director of the New York Creative Center. She spent years proving herself before earning admission to IFF's Perfumery School in 2013, training in New York, Singapore, France, and the Netherlands under senior perfumers she regards as extended teachers. Today she works as a fine-fragrance perfumer splitting her time between New York and Paris, creating for houses including Scents of Wood, Maison d'Etto, A Lab On Fire, and Caswell Massey. Her path into perfumery broke the mold, arriving not through chemistry but through anthropology, culture, and an abiding fascination with how scent shapes human experience.

    Philosophy

For Mackenzie, perfumery operates like architecture. She builds three-dimensional olfactory experiences, constructing fragrance formulas that function like physical structures, each layer supporting the next. Her creative process begins with research, diving into a client's universe to translate aesthetic vision into scent. She draws deep inspiration from anthropology, studying how scent shaped ancient Egyptian religious practice, how incense traveled the spice routes, how human civilization learned to mark time by seasonal aromas. This perspective grounds her work in storytelling rather than trend-following. She approaches ingredients the way a chef sources produce, obsessing over terroir and understanding how soil, climate, and extraction methods alter molecular composition. Her ongoing interest in IFF's Laboratoire Monique Remy connects her to natural materials harvested with care and specificity. She marvels at ingredients that require patience to reveal their true character, vetiver root pulled from earth, orris that must age, nutmeg hidden inside hard shells. For Mackenzie, fragrance is an intimate art form that touches memory and emotion in ways no other medium can.

    Creative Approach

Mackenzie's olfactory fingerprint favors clarity and intentionality over complexity for its own sake. Her minimalistic approach highlights key ingredients without unnecessary embellishment, letting singular materials command attention. She gravitates toward orange blossom, ambrette seed, clean musks and ambers, and maintains an ongoing fascination with hidden scents that must be discovered or aged into their full expression. Her work ranges from fresh and crisp to bold and animalic, sometimes within the same creation. California Snow captures high-altitude brightness while Hossegor channels coastal Atlantic energy. Macanudo strips vetiver down to its essential character, pairing hay absolute and cut grass with freshly turned earth and bright neroli. Her Scents of Wood creations demonstrate an ability to translate the wisdom and beauty of trees into liquid form. The tension between the natural and the designed, the raw and the refined, defines her sensibility.
