The Artisan
The Story of Daphné Bugey
Daphné Bugey grew up in Geneva with no family connections to perfumery. At ten, she fell under the spell of fragrance; a school trip to Grasse at thirteen sealed her fate. She studied chemistry to reach ISIPCA in Paris, graduated, and joined Firmenich in 1997. That career now spans roughly two decades, taking in work across luxury and niche houses alike. For Le Labo she crafted Rose 31 and Bergamote 22; for Jean Paul Gaultier she co-created the blockbuster Scandal and its nocturnal counterpart Scandal by Night. She brought Rose Milano to Giorgio Armani, shaped the popular She Wood and He Wood lines for Dsquared2, and has worked across Issey Miyake, Valentino, Kenzo, and Christian Louboutin. Her trajectory from curious teenager to Firmenich senior perfumer reads like a case study in determined preparation meeting the right opportunity.
Philosophy
Bugey approaches fragrance as an emotional exercise first. She looks for moments of surprise within familiar structures, favoring combinations that feel unexpected without being disruptive. Authenticity matters to her; she believes in honoring ingredients rather than forcing them into predetermined narratives. Her work suggests a perfumer who trusts instinct but grounds it in solid technical foundations built over decades. She has spoken about loving the way a single scent can shift meaning depending on what surrounds it, a sensitivity that surfaces in her layered, multi-dimensional creations.
Creative Approach
Bugey's style leans toward the floral and woody, though she handles both masculine and feminine compositions with equal ease. She shows particular affinity for rose accords (evident in Rose 31 and Rose Milano) and for the clean, sharp character of cedar and vetiver in the Dsquared2 Wood line. Her work often balances tenderness with structure, deploying bright citrus openings against deeper base layers. She favors contrast: tender against sharp, transparent against warm. Her output spans accessible designer fragrances and more rarefied niche work, suggesting a versatile sensibility.
