The Story of Vanilla absolute Orpur®

Hand-pollinated, sun-cured, and solvent-extracted from Madagascar's Bourbon vanilla, this absolute distills eight months of patient craftsmanship into a singular, warmly complex aromatic experience.

    Heritage

The vanilla orchid hails from Mexico, where native Aztec civilizations first combined its pods with cacao for ceremonial beverages. The Spanish conquistadors quickly recognized its value, exporting both ingredients to Europe where they became luxury commodities. When botanical collectors attempted cultivation beyond Mexico, the vines refused to fruit. The reason remained a mystery for over three centuries until 1836, when Belgian botanist Charles Morren solved the puzzle: every vanilla flower requires manual pollination, a task performed exclusively by the Melipona bee in Mesoamerica. Hand-pollination techniques unlocked global production, but the crop remained extraordinarily labor-intensive. Madagascar emerged as the dominant producer due to its climate and colonial agricultural infrastructure. Today, Bourbon vanilla from Madagascar remains one of the most carefully cultivated ingredients in perfumery, its value reflecting countless hours of patient hand-tending under tropical sun.

    Production

How Vanilla absolute Orpur® Is Made

Givaudan's Orpur Vanilla Bourbon Absolute emerges through a meticulous solvent extraction process. Skilled farmers in Madagascar hand-pollinate each orchid flower during its brief 12-hour window of viability, then wait nine months for the cured green pods to develop their characteristic aroma. After harvesting, the beans undergo a months-long curing process involving sweating and sun-drying. Perfumers then dissolve these cured beans in a food-grade solvent, drawing out aromatic compounds along with pigments and waxes. A subsequent alcoholic washing purifies the extract, removing impurities while concentrating the characteristic vanilla scent. The result is a rich, viscous absolute far more potent than any fragrance oil, offering the complete aromatic spectrum of the living plant.
