Heritage
A house, in its own words
Jennifer Botto trained as a natural perfumer at Anya's Garden in Miami, a recognized institution for botanical perfumery education, where she earned a diploma. After establishing her practice, she founded Thorn & Bloom in Charlestown, Massachusetts. The brand released its inaugural collection of nine fragrances in June 2015, as noted by ÇaFleureBon at the time of launch. Thorn & Bloom participates in the independent beauty community, exhibiting at trade events focused on indie and artisanal brands. The company received recognition in 2016 when it won Best Fragrance at the Indie Beauty Expo events held in both New York and Los Angeles. This award placed the young brand among notable independents at a trade show dedicated to emerging beauty companies. The Boston-area base situates Thorn & Bloom within a region with historical ties to American commerce and craftsmanship, though the brand operates independently of any larger fragrance houses.
Botto works exclusively with natural aromatic materials, a commitment that shapes every aspect of the creative process. Natural perfumery requires different technical approaches compared to conventional fragrance construction, as natural materials behave differently in formulation and present distinct challenges in achieving consistency. The founder draws inspiration from botanical sources, plant origins, and the complexity found in natural raw materials. Rather than synthetic recreations, the brand uses actual aromatic materials derived from plants, flowers, woods, and resins. This philosophy influences how fragrances are composed, typically layering multiple natural ingredients to build depth and character. The approach reflects a broader movement in independent perfumery toward transparency in materials and a return to pre-synthetic perfumery traditions. Botto's farm background reportedly influenced her connection to natural materials, though specific details about which botanicals or which farm remain drawn from brand-sourced narrative rather than independent verification.
