A house, in its own words
Diane St. Clair spent years working her farm in Orwell, Vermont before entering the world of perfumery. Her transition into creating fragrances reportedly grew from a lifelong engagement with aromatic materials and a desire to capture the sensory experience of rural life. In 2018, she launched St. Clair Scents with three initial fragrances: Frost, First Cut, and Gardener's Glove. These debut releases reflected her immediate environment, with First Cut evoking the scent of fresh-cut grass and Gardener's Glove capturing the memory of working soil with bare hands. The following year brought additional releases including Eve (2019) and Pandora (2019). By 2020, the house introduced Song of Aubrac, expanding its thematic range. The collection continued growing with Moving On and Edge Effects in 2022, both representing new directions in the brand's olfactory vocabulary. In 2024, St. Clair released Blue Marble, one of the house's most recent compositions. Throughout this period, the brand maintained its small-batch, handcrafted approach, with Diane managing every aspect of production from her Vermont base. The house has attracted attention from fragrance critics and enthusiasts who appreciate its artisanal positioning and the personal nature of its creations.
Diane St. Clair approaches perfumery as a form of storytelling through scent. She has described her mission as designing and hand-making fragrances that encourage people to find a new appreciation for the sense of smell. This philosophy positions olfactory experience as something worth cultivating and attending to, rather than simply consuming. Her compositions often originate from personal memory and the specific sensory landscape of her Vermont farm. Rather than following industry trends or market demands, she creates fragrances that reflect her own perspective on the world around her. The farm environment plays a central role in this creative process, providing both literal inspiration and a material source for her work. St. Clair has spoken about perfumery as a poetic endeavor, using fragrance to translate moments, places, and emotions into something others can experience on their skin. Her approach prioritizes authenticity of vision over commercial considerations, resulting in a collection that feels cohesive yet varied across its releases.
