A house, in its own words
The story of Sanctuary begins in 2021, a year that saw unprecedented attention on biodiversity loss and the illegal wildlife trade. The founders recognized that the fragrance industry, historically indifferent to ecological consequences, could instead become a vehicle for awareness. They chose a portfolio approach: instead of releasing one signature scent, they built a growing library of perfumes, each dedicated to a different endangered species. This structure allows the brand to continuously expand its conservation message. The earliest releases, including Vaquita Dolphin, Amur Leopard, Red Panda, and Javan Rhino, established the house's identity as both perfume maker and advocate. North Atlantic Right Whale followed the same year, bringing marine conservation into the collection. By 2024, Sanctuary had added Malayan Tiger and Cross River Gorilla, signaling the brand's ambition to cover biodiversity across habitats, from tropical forests to open ocean. The brand has not publicly disclosed its founders or headquarters, which is unusual in the industry, but its stated mission of supporting endangered species through fragrance has resonated with consumers seeking purpose-driven luxury. The Amazon Rainforest and Saola Asian Unicorn entries further anchor the collection in specific ecosystems under threat.
Sanctuary operates from a straightforward belief: extinction is irreversible, and every species matters. The brand rejects the idea that conservation messaging must be subtle or metaphorical. By naming each fragrance directly after an animal, it forces wearers to confront what is at stake. The choice of endangered species, rather than extinct ones, is deliberate. These are creatures that can still be saved, and the brand's proceeds, at least according to its stated mission, support conservation efforts. The philosophy extends to the ingredients themselves. Sanctuary positions itself as a clean fragrance house, avoiding certain synthetic compounds that have raised health or environmental concerns. The approach is minimalist in intent, focusing on transparent composition rather than complexity for its own sake. Wearers are meant to feel a connection to the natural world, not just an olfactory experience. The discovery set format, which presents six fragrances at once, reflects another aspect of the philosophy: conservation is not about choosing one species over another. All of them matter. The brand encourages sampling broadly rather than narrowing to a single favorite.
