A house, in its own words
Paul Kiler began studying perfumery in 2005, embarking on a self-directed education in aromatic materials and composition techniques. He spent several years developing his craft before launching his first scents for PK Perfumes in 2011. That initial collection included multiple fragrances released simultaneously, among them Ere, Cafe Diem, Violet Chocolatier, Lita, and Carissa, all dated to 2012 in fragrance databases. The early catalog demonstrated Kiler's interest in diverse thematic territory, from gourmand themes to dark oud compositions. In 2013, Gold Leather joined the lineup, reflecting his attraction to rich, leathery accords. Beyond his own brand, Kiler contributed to the development of Zoologist Perfumes, helping that Canadian house launch two of its early scents. This collaboration positioned him within a network of independent perfumers reshaping the niche fragrance landscape in North America. The Zoologist association brought visibility to PK Perfumes among fragrance collectors seeking unusual compositions. In 2015, Kiler released TNT, a fragrance that became notable within the community for its explosive, nitro-aromatic character. Starry Starry Night and Heaven Fresh followed in 2016. The brand continued releasing selective new work, with Maderas de Oriente Oscuro appearing in 2019. Throughout this period, Kiler remained the only perfumer working with the house, maintaining direct control over every composition.
PK Perfumes operates under a stated commitment to what Kiler calls Real Perfumery. This approach emphasizes the use of complete, quality materials rather than simplified chemical approximations. Kiler has described himself as part of the Real Perfumery movement, though this designation represents his own framing of his work. The philosophy suggests that natural ingredients, when available in suitable quality, offer olfactory complexity that synthetic alternatives cannot fully replicate. However, the brand does not position itself as an all-natural house. Instead, it appears to advocate for thoughtful material selection across both natural and synthetic categories. Kiler's compositions often feature prominent heart and base notes, suggesting a preference for fragrances that reveal their character over time rather than leading with ephemeral top notes. This orientation appeals to fragrance wearers who evaluate scents based on their dry-down evolution rather than initial impression. The brand's selective release schedule reflects an unhurried approach to creation, with new fragrances appearing years apart rather than in rapid succession. This pacing allows Kiler time to refine individual compositions and ensures that each release represents a considered creative choice rather than market-driven volume production.
