Heritage
A house, in its own words
Oswald Paré did not train in a traditional perfumery house or inherit a family fragrance business. His introduction to perfume came from smelling fragrances at shopping malls during his youth. This humble beginning sparked a curiosity that led him to explore the niche and independent fragrance scene, where he encountered more complex, unconventional compositions. Around 2011, Paré officially began his formal journey in perfumery, entering into a collaboration with Dawn Spencer Hurwitz of DSH Perfumes in Colorado. This partnership provided foundational training and access to an established artisanal perfumery operation. Through this collaboration, Paré developed his understanding of natural materials, tincture creation, and fragrance composition before launching his own label. The name Motif Olfactif itself reflects his belief that every fragrance carries a recognizable motif or pattern that anchors the wearer to a specific memory or sensation. Paré describes the brand as a natural progression of his personal fragrance journey, evolving from consumer to creator. The house maintains independence, with Paré serving as the sole perfumer and decision-maker. His background in Senegal, particularly memories from Dakar from approximately 18 years ago, has influenced at least one fragrance in the collection, demonstrating how personal history directly shapes the brand's output.
Motif Olfactif operates on the belief that fragrance should serve a functional purpose beyond mere aesthetic pleasure. The house aims to create perfumes that feel unique to the wearer, functioning almost like a personal signature or identifying marker. This philosophy prioritizes individuality over trend-following, positioning each fragrance as a distinct olfactory statement rather than a mainstream adaptation. Paré approaches fragrance creation from a deeply personal angle, translating lived experiences, travel memories, and emotional moments into scent compositions. The brand rejects the idea that perfume must be purely decorative or disconnected from the wearer's identity. Instead, every release carries a narrative quality, inviting the wearer to form their own association with the scent. The house does not chase seasonal releases or market trends, instead developing new fragrances based on when a concept or memory feels complete enough to warrant bottling. This measured approach reflects a dedication to craft over commercial volume.
