Heritage
A house, in its own words
Betsey Johnson started her fashion journey by designing blouses simply to make rent, a humble beginning that evolved into an internationally recognized fashion brand. She launched her label in 1978, establishing herself within a design landscape that blended London's street-level punk sensibility with the elegance of classical ballet. This unusual combination became her signature approach, setting her apart from contemporaries. The brand grew through Johnson's distinctive vision, which rejected conventional fashion rules in favor of exaggerated silhouettes, playful prints, and unapologetically bold statements. Her background as a working designer paying her own bills shaped a pragmatic approach to building the business, one that prioritized authenticity over industry approval. When Johnson decided to enter fragrance, she drew upon years of personal collecting habits, specifically seeking out vintage Schiaparelli perfume bottles for inspiration. Her first fragrance launch in 2006 reflected this passion for perfume history, serving as both a commercial extension of her brand and a personal tribute to the artistry of vintage perfumery. The intimate launch event, held at her Greenwich Village apartment with 55 attendees, demonstrated the personal nature of her business philosophy.
Johnson's approach to both fashion and fragrance reflects her belief in personal expression over adherence to trends. She built her fashion label on the premise that clothing should be fun, wearable, and unafraid to make a statement. This same philosophy carried into her fragrance development, where she reportedly wanted to capture something of her own personality in liquid form. The choice to start with vintage perfume bottles as inspiration suggests a reverence for the craft traditions of perfumery, an industry she entered later in her career after establishing herself in fashion. Johnson has not been shy about her enthusiasm for the project, speaking publicly about her long-standing interest in collecting and the joy she found in translating that into a product her customers could experience. Her fragrance line maintains the accessible, playful spirit of her clothing designs, avoiding the rarefied exclusivity that often characterizes luxury perfumery.
