    Master Perfumer

    Richard Yu

Richard Yu's path to perfumery winds through an unexpected starting point: advertising. In 1993, he entered the creative industry, driven by an enthusiasm for craft that never dimmed. His trajectory shifted when he found his way into flavourist training—a foundation that would later shape his singular approach to fragrance composition. Today, as Senior Perfumer at Givaudan's Fragrance & Beauty division, he draws from a background that spans both disciplines. Born and raised in rural China, Yu brings an unusual perspective to his work—one grounded in land, nature, and a deep familiarity with raw materials. His cross-disciplinary training sets him apart: he thinks in tastes and textures, not merely scents, bringing dimension to every composition he touches.

    How Richard composes

Yu favours bold contrasts and unexpected texture. He works frequently with oriental ingredients and innovative分子 combinations, bringing a tactile quality to his compositions. His flavourist roots show in a preference for ingredients with edible, almost tactile qualities—notes that feel almost tangible, that you can almost taste. He has a particular skill for balancing sweetness with earthiness, warmth with freshness, creating fragrances that feel both grounded and luminous.

    Philosophy

    What drives Richard

Yu approaches fragrance creation the way a composer approaches an orchestra. He seeks the unexpected harmony between ingredients that most perfumers would never pair. His flavourist background gives him a heightened sensitivity to how materials behave on skin, how they evolve, how they interact with the wearer. He believes fragrance should surprise, should tell a story that unfolds over hours. Rather than chasing trends, Yu focuses on emotional resonance—on what a scent makes someone feel rather than what it declares.
