The Story of Thierry Wasser and Delphine Jelk
Thierry Wasser arrived at Guerlain in 2008 as the first perfumer in the house's 180-year history who did not carry the Guerlain name. Born in Switzerland, he had originally pursued botany before enrolling at the Givaudan perfumery school. He cut his teeth at Charabot and later Firmenich, where he worked closely with Annick Ménardo. When Guerlain came calling, Wasser brought with him a botanist's sensibility and a pragmatist's eye for quality sourcing. In 2014, he brought Delphine Jelk into the fold. Also Swiss-born, Jelk had already distinguished herself in the industry. Her very first Guerlain creation, La Petite Robe Noire, became an immediate bestseller. Together they now form the creative heart of the house: Wasser travels extensively to forge direct relationships with growers and distillers across the globe, while Jelk holds down the lab and leads actual composition. It is a partnership built on complementary instincts, one that has kept the house culturally relevant without sacrificing its romantic heritage. In 2014, France awarded Wasser the Légion d'Honneur. He has described himself as a pragmatic poet, someone who believes a fragrance must first pass his own wear test before anyone else闻到 it.
Philosophy
They believe a fragrance cannot be rushed and that creation is never truly finished until an ingredient has been personally evaluated. Wasser speaks of perfume as texture, drawing loose parallels to music and the color fields of Mark Rothko. He carries the Guerlinade, the house's foundational accord of bergamot, rose, iris, tonka, and vanilla, like a compass, knowing no work leaves the building without it. Jelk approaches each brief as a fresh dialogue, not a formula. She has spoken of restoring the historical connection between Guerlain and its distillers, particularly in Grasse, where the house once marketed itself as perfumer-distiller. The two share a conviction that perfume is intimate rather than ornamental, something that should feel inseparable from the person wearing it.
Creative Approach
The duo favors natural materials and direct supply relationships. Wasser makes annual pilgrimages to flower fields and distillation sites, often spending months away from his laboratory to ensure the raw materials meet his standards. When he returns, the botanical knowledge from his original diploma informs how he evaluates what he finds. Jelk brings a Swiss precision to composition and an ability to honor tradition while reaching toward something new. Their fragrances tend to balance tenderness with structure, whether that shows up as the playful皮裙 noir of La Petite Robe Noire or the warm resinous quality of Ambre Éternel. The Guerlinade anchors everything, yet neither perfumer allows it to become a crutch. Texture and evolution on the skin matter more than any single ingredient. Néroli Plein Sud saw Jelk write a love letter to Antoine de Saint-Exupéry and the house's own Vol de Nuit, proof that their work can carry literary weight without becoming academic.
