The Artisan
The Story of Sidonie Lancesseur
Sidonie Lancesseur grew up in Paris with no family ties to the perfume industry, yet her path toward fragrance creation began unexpectedly. During chemistry studies, she spent a summer internship in Grasse, the world capital of perfume, and experienced what she calls a revelation. The natural raw materials there, flowers, resins, woods and spices, cast a spell that redirected her entire trajectory. She enrolled at ISIPCA, the prestigious International School of Perfume, Cosmetics and Food Aromatics, and graduated in 2004. Lancesseur joined Robertet shortly after, where she trained under Michel Almairac, a renowned figure in modern perfumery who shaped her appreciation for tight, purposeful formulas. Over nearly two decades at Robertet, she has built a diverse portfolio working across both niche and mainstream houses. Her collaborations include By Kilian, Olfactive Studio, Bon Parfumeur, Zadig & Voltaire, Repetto, Lalique, Frapin, and more recently Off-White. This breadth across luxury and accessible brands reflects her flexibility and range as a creator. She remains based in Paris within Robertet's Fine Fragrance creation team, continuously developing new fragrances that balance emotional resonance with technical precision.
Philosophy
Lancesseur believes each raw material must earn its place in a composition. She gravitates toward short, modern formulas where every ingredient serves a clear purpose and contributes to the overall emotional arc. Rather than building elaborate structures, she aims for legibility and authenticity, allowing materials to speak directly without excessive layering or ornamentation. She views fragrance as a vehicle for memory and sensation, seeking to capture moments, places and feelings through scent. Unexpected combinations and deliberate contrasts interest her more than conventional accord-building. She does not treat perfumery as a purely technical exercise but as a means to materialize emotions and atmospheres. Her work often draws from personal experiences, travel memories and the sensory landscapes she encounters. The goal is never complexity for its own sake, but clarity and emotional truth. She approaches each project with curiosity, asking what story the fragrance should tell and what sensation it should evoke before considering the technical mechanics of construction.
Creative Approach
Lancesseur's signature leans toward warm, woody compositions with spicy and amber accents. She frequently incorporates cedarwood, musk, rose, pink pepper, cardamom and patchouli, building fragrances that feel both grounded and sophisticated. Her work is decidedly modern in its restraint. Rather than maximalist constructions, she favors clean, concise formulas where each material has room to breathe and register. This economy of means distinguishes her from perfumers who rely on layered complexity. The result often has a luminous quality, with amber warmth offset by freshness from spice or citrus. Her niche work for By Kilian demonstrates this balance, particularly in Black Phantom, where dark roasted coffee and rum meet sugary sweetness without becoming heavy. Her Olfactive Studio pieces like Lumière Blanche show a different facet, channeling solar brightness through spicy freshness. Across her portfolio, whether working on luxury liquids or more accessible lines, there is a consistent thread of warmth, elegance and intentional simplicity that defines her olfactive fingerprint.
