The Story of Serge de Oliveira

Serge de Oliveira did not follow the conventional path into perfumery. Rather than pursuing a master's in chemistry, he built his foundation through a technical baccalaureate in bio-industries and a BTS in pharmaceutical and industrial cosmetics. He spent one year training as an assistant perfumer at ISIPCA, the legendary French perfumery school, before entering the industry. His early career took him through L'Oréal and Dior, where he worked on fragrance development and stabilization, then to Chanel as an olfactive quality controller. In 2002, he began as an assistant perfumer at IFF, where he fell under the spell of raw materials. He joined Robertet in Grasse eight years ago, rising to perfumer. "If Robertet had not hired me," he has said, "perhaps I would never have had the opportunity to become a perfumer." That humility, paired with relentless curiosity, defines him. Today he creates for rising brands including Ormaie, 100BON, and L'Atelier Parfum, bringing an authentic, materials-driven sensibility to every composition.

    Philosophy

For de Oliveira, perfumery is an endless education. He believes the job relies above all on passion, but also requires stubbornness and luck. He describes being a perfumer as learning every single day, noting that 1,500 raw materials exist and that knowing each one is a life-long pursuit. "The proximity to natural raw materials, from harvest to transformation, is a true privilege and a great source of inspiration," he has said. He draws ideas from everywhere: travel, museums, cities, meals, textures, fashion. Everything must be a source of inspiration. The market also demands constant attention, he notes. Like fashion, perfumery runs on upcoming trends, and he stays close to those currents to present the latest directions to his clients. Each creation, he says, reflects a part of his personality and lets him express himself freely.

    Creative Approach

De Oliveira gravitates naturally toward woody notes, particularly vetiver and patchouli, which drew his attention early under the mentorship of Richard Ibanez at IFF. His recent work leans heavily into 100% natural compositions, a deliberate and more demanding approach that suits his materials-first philosophy. At Robertet, he has access to one of the world's most extensive natural ingredient libraries, and he uses it to craft fragrances with clear, honest structure. His style tends toward clean, expressive accords that let individual materials breathe. Whether working with citrus zest, rose and black pepper, or dense woody-ambers, his compositions feel grounded and purposeful rather than decorative. He favors transparency over complexity for its own sake.
