The Artisan
The Story of Nicolas Bonneville
Nicolas Bonneville discovered his calling at 13, during a childhood holiday in Grasse. The fragrant fields and artisanal workshops left an indelible mark. He trained under Jacques Maurel in Grasse, who introduced him to the Jean Carles method of perfumery, instilling technical precision and a reverence for raw materials. Nicolas later joined Takasago, where he worked alongside Françoise Caron and Francis Kurkdjian, absorbing their approaches to blending tradition with innovation. At 27, he moved to Fragrance Resources, now part of DSM-Firmenich, where he continues to develop fragrances. A native of Le Mans, he grew up attending the legendary 24 Hours race each year, and draws a clear parallel between motor racing and perfumery, both demanding endurance, collaboration, and collective excellence. His work spans luxury houses and accessible brands alike, reflecting a philosophy that style and freedom of expression are intrinsic to every creation.
Philosophy
Nicolas views his profession as exploration. A perfume is never a coincidence, it is thought through and developed methodically. He constantly asks himself how to conjure novelties, whether brand-new interpretations or fresh takes on classic formulas. His driving belief is that fashion and perfumery are intimately linked, sharing common elements of style, expression, and intention. He loves the idea, borrowed from Pop and Street Art, of making emotions and messages accessible to everyone, much as Warhol, Haring, or Banksy repurposed everyday objects to reinterpret urban experience. For Nicolas, collaboration and collective performance are essential, qualities he honed watching Le Mans teams work toward a shared goal.
Creative Approach
Nicolas is passionate about natural raw materials, a devotion that has been inherent to him since childhood. He travels the world to follow harvests: India for jasmine sambac, Italy for mandarin and bergamot, Florence for iris, Tunisia for orange blossom. He even grows ingredients himself in Paris, cultivating tuberose, osmanthus, rose centifolia, jasmine grandiflorum, and mimosa. This intimate connection with naturals shapes his technical approach, favoring ingredients that carry emotional weight and geographical specificity. His aesthetic bridges artisanal tradition and contemporary innovation, drawing inspiration from visionary fashion designers like Nicolas Ghesquière and Hedi Slimane. The result is fragrance as wearable storytelling, translating runway vision into something deeply personal.
