The Artisan
The Story of Nicolas Beaulieu
Nicolas Beaulieu never intended to become a perfumer. As a child, he dreamed of uncovering ancient civilizations, planning to study archaeology. Then he discovered ISIPCA, the prestigious French perfume school, and his future shifted entirely. He enrolled, studied the art of perfumery, and then continued his education at IFF's own perfumery school before joining Laboratories Monique Remy (LMR), the IFF subsidiary known for its rigorous focus on natural raw materials. At LMR, Beaulieu developed a deep appreciation for how naturals are harvested and processed, knowledge that still informs his work today. After training, he worked across IFF's global outposts: Holland, New York, Shanghai, gathering experience in different markets and scent cultures before returning to Paris in 2008 to focus on new creations. His portfolio spans from accessible mass-market fragrances to luxury launches, working with houses like Christian Louboutin, Salvatore Ferragamo, Lancôme, Paco Rabanne, Clinique, and Tiffany & Co. He has also composed for brands including Comme des Garçons, Chopard, Carolina Herrera, and Benetton. This breadth reflects a career built on versatility, and the ability to translate a brand's identity into something you can wear on your skin.
Philosophy
For Beaulieu, perfumery is fundamentally about pleasure and connection. He creates to see smiles bloom, to hear someone say they love wearing his fragrance. That direct human response matters more to him than critical acclaim. He puts his heart into giving people pleasure, and he views accessibility as a luxury of the profession itself. You can work for the benefit of everyone, he believes, using olfactory forms of all kinds. His approach favors powerful scent trails and short, simple formulas that communicate a clear, direct message rather than intellectualizing the experience. Beaulieu finds unexpected inspiration in oenology, the study of wine. He sees genuine parallels between the nuances of wine and the nuances of scent, both requiring attention to how individual elements interact and evolve. He remains fascinated by the distillation of new raw materials and the creation of synthetic compounds, viewing these less-explored resources as a wellspring of future possibilities.
Creative Approach
Beaulieu's work demonstrates remarkable range, moving fluidly between floral-oriental compositions, modern woody scents, and bold power fragrances. He gravitates toward assertive, memorable trails rather than whisper-soft compositions. His time at LMR left an indelible mark, and natural ingredients often anchor his creations even as he incorporates synthetics with purpose. He favors directness over complexity for its own sake, preferring formulas that make a clear statement. His portfolio reveals this philosophy in practice: tuberose-forward compositions with fluorescent intensity, aromatic leathers, patchouli-driven scents built on tension and contrast, and modern florals that balance elegance with presence. Whether working on a mass-market scent or a luxury launch, the underlying approach remains consistent, crafting fragrances that are pleasant to wear, that unite rather than divide, that feel convivial in the truest sense.
