The Artisan
The Story of Josh Lee
Josh Lee wears his origins like a signature note. Born and raised in George Town, Penang, he grew up navigating the aromatic tapestry of a family cake-ingredient shop, surrounded by vanilla and chocolate, while his father marked departures with a spritz of cologne. This childhood ritual sparked a obsession that would define his life. Lee pursued chemistry at Universiti Pertanian Malaysia before traveling to Versailles to study at ISIPCA, the prestigious institution founded by Jean-Jacques Guerlain in 1970. He completed a second Master's in Business and Management from Plymouth University, winning IFEAT's Best Student Award for his thesis on fragrance formulation. After cutting his teeth as a Fragrance Evaluator for French house Technico Flor in Kuala Lumpur, Lee joined Malaysia's beauty powerhouse SimplySiti as Senior Product Development Manager, where he built award-winning skincare and color cosmetic lines before launching his own eponymous brand. His Penang atelier, Josh Lee Fragrances, has become a destination for scent pilgrims seeking Malaysian identity bottled in European technique.
Philosophy
Lee believes every fragrance tells a story about where it came from. His philosophy centers on preserving cultural memory through scent, treating his craft as a form of aromatic archive-keeping. 'We need to preserve our heritage in order to move forward,' he has said, and this conviction shapes every composition. Rather than chasing global trends, he looks inward, drawing inspiration from the spice lanes of George Town, the floral wealth of Malaysian rainforests, and the layered histories of Southeast Asian trade routes. He rejects the notion that perfumery must choose between tradition and modernity. Each bottle becomes a vessel carrying memories across generations, inviting wearers to experience places they may never visit but can carry close to their skin. His 'Heritage through Scent' tagline is not marketing language but a personal mission statement, one that honors both the craft's European roots and his Southeast Asian homeland.
Creative Approach
Lee's olfactory vocabulary is distinctly Asian yet globally informed. His compositions weave warm spices like nutmeg, cinnamon, and cardamom with tropical florals including hibiscus and rose, grounded by creamy sandalwood. Marine notes appear in his George Town fragrance, nodding to the colonial port city's relationship with the sea. He gravitates toward complexity that feels organic rather than constructed, capturing the layered reality of Malaysian heritage sites and multicultural intersections. His OUD and Nyonya collections demonstrate comfort with darker, resinous materials alongside delicate floral accents. Rather than minimalist restraint, Lee embraces abundance, layering cultural references the way George Town layers colonial architecture, Chinese temples beside Dutch squares. The turquoise-green liquid of his debut fragrance even mimics the sea surrounding Penang, proving that for Lee, concept and composition operate as a single unified vision.
